On 9-1-2024 a new law “The Mason Treat Act” went into effect. This act deals with the purchase of a motor vehicle, within the state of Oklahoma, and it needing to be pre-registered with the State. If it is purchased from a dealer then the dealer will pre-register it with the state, if it is purchased from an individual either the seller or the buyer must pre-register it with the state. This pre-registration will be for a temporary tag that needs to be displayed until the vehicle obtains a permanent tag from the state or from a tribe. The vehicle must be pre-registered withing 48 hours of purchase.
The website for the pre-registration is service.ok.gov
Once the pre-registration is complete you will receive a temporary paper tag to download via email. This temporary paper tag must be affixed to the vehicle within 5 days from the date of sale, and may be used for up to 10 days.
Within that 10 days you should be receiving a metal temporary plate with two pre-registration decals. Once you receive this metal plate it must be affixed to the vehicle and it will remain on the vehicle until it is fully registered with the state or a tribe.
Even if you plan on having a permanent tribal tag on the vehicle, it still needs to be pre-registered for the temporary tags.
If a vehicle is purchased out of state it does not need to be pre-registered with the State of Oklahoma.
The website service.ok.gov has all the information regarding this act and what needs to be done. It also has a list of what does not need to be pre-registered.
